The reaction to Frederick Douglass' abolitionism.

Picture
This is a picture of Douglass in 1877 after one of his elaborate speeches.

Reaction:

  • “I expose slavery in this country, because to expose it is to kill it. Slavery is one of those monsters of darkness to whom the light of truth is death”  http://thinkexist.com/quotes/frederick_douglass/3.html
  • Frederick Douglass' audience also did a lot to help him earn the support of abolitionism and anti-slavery
  • Although many knew slavery was wrong, many could agree that they knew deep down inside that Frederick was right, and they should be ashamed of themselves.
  • Many other abolitionists including William Lloyd Garrison supported Douglass in what he did, and offered to work with him on many occasions.
  • Because of Frederick's passion and truth spoken during his speeches, slavery was on it's way to being abolished.
  • Frederick Douglass had a way of persuading the people into the truth about slavery, and having them leave his speeches feeling ashamed for what they have done and how they have treated their slaves.
  • "If there is no struggle, there is no progress."

This is a picture of slaves picking cotton during the hot summer months of June and July.  Frederick Douglass referenced to this during his speech, What To The Slave Is The Fourth Of July?
