The reaction to Frederick Douglass' abolitionism.
This is a picture of Douglass in 1877 after one of his elaborate speeches.
Reaction:
- “I expose slavery in this country, because to expose it is to kill it. Slavery is one of those monsters of darkness to whom the light of truth is death” http://thinkexist.com/quotes/frederick_douglass/3.html
- Frederick Douglass' audience also did a lot to help him earn the support of abolitionism and anti-slavery
- Although many knew slavery was wrong, many could agree that they knew deep down inside that Frederick was right, and they should be ashamed of themselves.
- Many other abolitionists including William Lloyd Garrison supported Douglass in what he did, and offered to work with him on many occasions.
- Because of Frederick's passion and truth spoken during his speeches, slavery was on it's way to being abolished.
- Frederick Douglass had a way of persuading the people into the truth about slavery, and having them leave his speeches feeling ashamed for what they have done and how they have treated their slaves.
- "If there is no struggle, there is no progress."
